Steven J. Halmos

Steve Halmos has been involved in business since childhood. Born in Budapest, his family escaped from post-World War II Hungary hidden in a truck. They eventually settled in Miami, where, at 15, Halmos ran his first business, a paper route.

Halmos received an industrial engineering degree from Georgia Tech in 1970 and an M.B.A. from Harvard Business School in 1972. In 2012 and 2013, Halmos was back at Harvard Business School as an Entrepreneur in Residence.

At 21, while still at Georgia Tech, he cofounded SafeCard Services, Inc., The company registered consumers' credit cards at a central location. Customers could then call 24/7 to get card issuers notified if their cards were lost or stolen. Halmos and his cofounder had no financing, experience, or market research. But over the next 23 years, SafeCard became the largest company of its kind, receiving many accolades and honors.

Before retiring as the company's CEO in 1992, Halmos was named CEO of the Year and CEO of the Decade by Financial World. These are just two of the awards and honors he has received.

Halmos retired from SafeCard at age 44. He then formed Halmos Holdings to invest in real estate projects and other ventures. He also founded The Reunion Group, a provider of revenue-producing loyalty programs working with Chase, Citi, ExxonMobil, Bank of America, and others.

Steve Halmos and his wife, Madelaine, reside in Fort Lauderdale. They have two children, Jeff (the owner of clothing brand Monogram Studio) and Stephanie (an artist). Both of their children live in New York City.

About The Distinguished Lecture Series

The Distinguished Lecture Series (DLS) was established by Dean Emeritus Randolph A. Pohlman to inspire students by giving them a glimpse into the minds of successful and outstanding entrepreneurs and business leaders.

Distinguished lecturers articulate lessons learned and provide insight into our often complex business world. Students and the business community benefit from discussions ranging from business ethics to the practical application of academic theory. The general format of the DLS is a presentation, followed by questions and answers, or our speaker may simply "tell their story" and allow our audience to pose questions thereafter.

Initially created for students, the DLS has grown to include undergraduate and graduate students, faculty members, business leaders and distinguished members of our community.

Our past distinguished lecturers include: Angelo Elia, Jack Welch, Larry Bossidy, The Honorable Clarence Thomas, Robert L. Johnson, Alan Potamkin, Ronald Bergeron, Stephen A. Ross, Ph.D., and H. Wayne Huizenga (recipient of Ernst and Young's 2005 World Entrepreneur of the Year).

High profile entrepreneurs and business leaders interested in participating as a Distinguished Lecture Series speaker should contact the Office of Development at (954) 262-5008.
